Definition: What is the KISS principle?

KISS is a design principle that originated in the USA in the 1960s. KISS is an acronym for "keep it simple, stupid". Variations such as "keep it short and simple " or "keep it simple and straightforward" are also frequently used. The principle calls for finding the simplest solution to a problem. The principle of simplicity can be both the means and the goal. There are various areas that use the KISS principle, e.g. web design, product design and software development.

What are the advantages of the KISS principle?

  • Usability: A simple and easy-to-understand product has a higher utility value for the user
  • Comprehensibility: projects/products become more manageable, easier to maintain and therefore easier to understand
  • Flexibility: a simple product can be changed more flexibly

How is the KISS principle implemented in web design?

The KISS principle is primarily about avoiding unnecessary features or over-engineering. Web design focuses on the user: the easier a product is to use, the easier it is for the user to understand. The aim is therefore to design a product that appeals to the widest possible audience and is accessible to this audience.
