What is an intranet?

The word intranet is made up of the Latin: Intra = in, within and the English net = network and is a synonym for intranet portal.

An intranet is a computer network which, unlike the Internet, is not public. Internal intranet portals are used, for example, when the exchange of information and knowledge or organizational processes need to be accelerated.

Companies, universities and public authorities can use their own intranet to manage internal matters and create a platform for internal communication and collaboration. The intranet offers its users a secure, isolated network that functions independently of the Internet. As a rule, only internal employees have access to the company intranet.
