What does frontend development mean?

Frontend development is a hybrid function of web development and screen design. The frontend is the part of a website or application that is visible to users. In contrast, the backend is the non-visible part, which includes the server, server-side applications and database(s).

What does a frontend developer do?

A frontend developer is a programmer who implements the design and functionality of the web application. Frontend development is important for the usability and performance of the website. The developer must ensure that the website is accessible, easy to use and performant for all devices and screen sizes.

A backend developer, on the other hand, takes care of the maintenance of software and databases, the operation of the server and all processes that ensure that the information that is to be displayed in the frontend can be provided.

The tasks of a frontend developer include

  • HTML for structuring the website. The developer must write the code for this.

  • CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), which is used to control the design, layout, fonts, colors, etc. as well as the behavior on different screen sizes.

  • JavaScript, which is increasingly used in dynamic websites and extends the functionality of a pure HTML website.

If the front-end developer works with content management systems (CMS), they often use templates to separate code from design. Frameworks are used to program more efficiently, as they usually have libraries with already written code. Well-known frameworks are Vue.js, ReactJs, AngularJS, jQuery, Bootstrap etc.
