What are portals?

Portals are web applications, particularly in the WWW context, that integrate various web services into one application in a customizable way. The start page of portals often serves as an entry page. The technology and purpose of portals are mainly the subject of research in business informatics, as they offer interesting application possibilities in an organizational context.

Many of the intranet solutions used there are portal applications. Portals often offer functions such as document management systems. It is also worth mentioning that portals can be set up easily and inexpensively on the basis of open source software with the appropriate expertise.
