What is a backlink?

First of all, we need to clarify what a backlink is: A backlink is a link from an external domain to your own domain. This can point to the homepage or a subpage.

Links are different. For example, some links contain a link text, others contain the "nofollow" attribute, which prohibits search engines from following the link. The backlink sources are also different. There are websites that have a high authority (e.g. Wikipedia, news websites, etc.) and those that are considered less relevant for a topic, such as a blog with only 10 articles that is not well maintained overall. Accordingly, links are weighted differently: "dofollow" links are more valuable, links from relevant sources are better than those from e.g. casino websites.

What does backlink profile mean?

Every backlink of a website counts towards its so-called backlink profile. Links should be created in a "natural" way, through voluntarily placed links from sources relevant to the topic. A natural backlink profile is, depending on the website, more or less heterogeneous. The links are located in the body of the source content, less in the footer or sidebar. Some are nofollow, some have link texts with keywords and some are pure links without link text.

Unnatural backlink profiles, on the other hand, look different: For example, a large number of links from untrustworthy sources indicates a poor backlink profile. A large number of apparently purchased links also damages the backlink profile.

In this way, websites can even be specifically damaged: Link spam from bad websites can drag the backlink profile so negatively that it loses keyword rankings. In this case, you should consider disavowing these links or even the entire untrustworthy domain.

How can I evaluate my backlink profile?

Basically, as soon as you know the link providers of your backlinks, you can assess whether they are good, desired or bad, undesired backlinks. However, if there is sufficient suspicion, we recommend using professional software to analyze them.
