What is an editorial system used for?
An editorial system is a computer application that allows the editorial maintenance of journalistic content. The central characteristic feature of an editorial system is the separation of content and its presentation. The class of content management systems (CMS) is a particularly popular form of editorial system.
With a content management system, it is possible to manage a website editorially in a simple and convenient way without having any knowledge of web standards such as HTML and CSS. Typo3 is a particularly well-known content management system in this environment, although the PHP framework Drupal is also becoming increasingly important.
Most editing systems have a file manager or a web browser. This takes the user to the page to be edited and can then open it in an editor. Another important component is a sufficiently flexible authorization system. Depending on the assigned authorizations, the user logged into the content management system can edit the content of a website and also perform other tasks on it.
When using an editorial system, the content of the website is typically stored in a relations database. They are displayed on the basis of a combination of design templates, which define the layout of a website, and the CSS web standard.
