What exactly is Zend?

Zend Technologies Inc. is the company name of a company that has significantly contributed to the development of the PHP scripting language and offers solutions related to this language. Examples of this are the Zend Engine, which executes PHP bytecode as a runtime environment, or the Zend Framework, which provides a software basis for PHP applications, typically in the web environment. Other notable solutions from Zend Technologies Inc. are the Zend Server and the integrated development environment (IDE) Zend Studio.

The Zend Framework has become particularly well known. As a PHP framework, it forms the basis for a large number of PHP applications.
