Salesforce is an IT company from San Francisco and was founded in 1999 by Marc Benioff, a former Oracle and Apple manager. The company's aim is to provide a wide range of digital applications via a cloud solution.

Salesforce is and became known primarily for its strong presence in the field of customer relationship management (CRM), i.e. the management of relationships between customers and a company itself.

In the course of strong growth, however, Salesforce has significantly expanded its service portfolio in recent years and acquired other well-known software companies such as Tableau, EdgeSpring and Demandware.

This growth has enabled Salesforce to develop a whole range of its own CRM tools, such as a Sales Cloud, Marketing Cloud or Service Cloud. The aim of the individual tools is to take a more comprehensive view of CRM and to develop specialized solutions depending on the focus and requirements.

All of these tools are offered as Software as a Service (SaaS ) and can be linked to any number of sales or marketing channels.

However, Salesforce is also active in the Platform as a Service (PaaS ) sector and provides a platform for developers, such as Force.com, which can be used to program additional applications and extensions for the tools on offer.

Due to the relatively high price of the individual solutions, Salesforce is generally more worthwhile for medium-sized to large companies with a corresponding budget. Notable alternatives to the CRM top dog include Freshsales or HubSpot CRM. In the open source sector, SuiteCRM should also be mentioned.
