What does Enterprise Content Management mean?

Enterprisecontent management (ECM) is an umbrella term for methods and techniques for maintaining and providing content in an organizational context with the aim of supporting organizational processes.

A central approach of enterprise content management is to provide all information of an organization on the basis of a uniform system for internal or external use. Enterprise content management also forms the basis for electronic business (e-business).

Concrete ECM software typically follows a modular approach. It often integrates document management, groupware and workflow solutions. The principles, concepts and possible applications of enterprise content management technologies are traditionally studied and discussed in the field of business informatics.

One example of an ECMS is FirstSpirit.
